Higher Dietary Protein Helps Control Appetite
January 22, 2008
A new study shows that ghrelin, your stomach's very own appetite signal, is much more under control for a longer period of time in response to a high protein meal. When carbohydrates are eaten alone ghrelin is temporarily happy, but comes back with a vengeance 3 hours later (causing you to be more hungry).
Back in 2002 I was one of the first to report on the relationship of ghrelin to leptin and its important role in hunger. In fact, rule #4 of the Leptin Diet emphasizes this point: "Eat a breakfast containing protein." This new science helps confirm why it is so important to start the day with a higher protein breakfast, especially if you are prone to overeating.
